About The Lanby

Primary care, functional medicine, and wellness. All under one roof. We're built for your best not your baseline.

Learn More

When something feels off with your health, it can be tempting to treat the symptom and move on. But what if the more useful question isn’t just “What’s happening?” but “Why is this happening in the first place?”

That’s the foundation of a root cause approach to medicine: looking beyond isolated symptoms to understand the underlying factors that may be contributing to them.

At The Lanby, this philosophy shapes how we approach both care and testing. Rather than ordering a long list of one-off tests every time something comes up, we start with a comprehensive view of your health, use that information to guide your Care Plan, and then test strategically to understand what is changing over time.

The goal isn’t to test more. It’s to learn more from the right testing.

What Does a Root Cause Approach to Medicine Mean?

Traditional healthcare often focuses on identifying and treating the most immediate problem. That approach can be important and necessary, especially when a specific symptom or condition requires treatment.

A root cause approach asks a broader set of questions.

If your blood sugar is elevated, what might be contributing to it? If you’re experiencing fatigue, are there nutritional, metabolic, hormonal, sleep, or lifestyle factors worth exploring? If a biomarker is outside the optimal range, what can we learn from looking at the bigger picture?

Rather than viewing each symptom or lab result in isolation, root cause care looks at how different aspects of your health may be connected.

This can include factors such as:

  • Nutrition and nutrient status
  • Metabolic health
  • Hormone balance
  • Sleep and recovery
  • Stress
  • Physical activity
  • Gut health and digestion
  • Family history and genetics
  • Lifestyle and environmental factors

The goal is to build a more complete picture of your health and use that information to make informed, personalized decisions about your care.

How The Lanby Takes a Root Cause Approach

At The Lanby, we believe your health data is most valuable when it is viewed in context and over time.

That starts with your Annual Baseline Visit.

Rather than beginning with a handful of standard labs and adding individual tests throughout the year whenever something comes up, we start with a comprehensive lab panel covering 85+ biomarkers. This gives your Care Team a detailed snapshot of your health across key areas and establishes a meaningful baseline.

From there, your care is personalized based on what we learn.

Maybe your initial labs show that insulin is higher than expected. Instead of simply noting the result and moving on, we can use that information to guide conversations around nutrition, movement, sleep, and other lifestyle factors that may influence metabolic health. We can then retest insulin later in the year to see how things have changed.

The same principle can apply to other biomarkers. Your initial results help determine what is worth monitoring and when, rather than automatically repeating every test on every visit.

Why We Test Four Times a Year

Testing four times a year doesn’t mean repeating the same comprehensive panel every three months.

Instead, our approach typically includes:

1. A comprehensive annual baseline

Your baseline lab panel includes 85+ biomarkers and is designed to provide a broad view of your health. It gives your Care Team the information needed to identify areas to pay attention to and establish starting points for key biomarkers.

2. Three additional testing points throughout the year

The remaining testing is more targeted and guided by what we learn from your baseline, your health goals, and changes we make throughout the year.

For example, if a particular metabolic marker is elevated at baseline, we may recommend monitoring it later to understand whether the changes you've made are having an impact.

This creates a cycle of:

Test → Learn → Personalize → Implement → Retest → Refine

Instead of collecting data for the sake of collecting data, we use testing to inform your care.

Why a Comprehensive Baseline Matters

A comprehensive baseline can also help your Care Team see potential areas of concern before they become symptomatic.

You may feel perfectly healthy while certain biomarkers are beginning to shift. Without looking at a broader set of data, those changes may not be identified until they become more pronounced or start contributing to symptoms.

By establishing a detailed baseline, we can identify patterns and potential areas to monitor earlier and have a reference point to compare against in the future.

It also means that when a new symptom does arise, your Care Team isn't starting from zero.

They already have a broader understanding of your health history, previous lab results, and trends over time. That context can help inform the next step rather than automatically triggering another round of disconnected testing.

Less Testing. More Context.

More testing isn't necessarily better care.

In fact, constantly ordering isolated labs can create a lot of information without necessarily creating more understanding. A single result can be difficult to interpret without knowing where you started, what else is happening in the body, and how that marker has changed over time.

At The Lanby, we believe trending is often more informative than a single data point.

That's why we look at your labs as part of an ongoing story.

Where did you start?
What changed?
What interventions did you make?
Did the numbers move?
What should we focus on next?

This approach allows your Care Team to use your health data to make care more personalized and actionable.

A Different Way to Think About Preventive Care

Preventive care shouldn't only begin when something is wrong.

It's about understanding your health while you're well, identifying opportunities to improve, and making informed changes before small issues have the chance to become bigger ones.

That's what a root cause approach is ultimately about: zooming out to understand the whole picture, then zooming in on what matters most to you.

At The Lanby, your care isn't based on a checklist of tests or a one-size-fits-all schedule. We establish a comprehensive baseline, use your results to guide your care, and continue to monitor the biomarkers that are most relevant to your health and goals.

Because the goal isn't to order more tests.

It's to ask better questions, understand your health more deeply, and use what we learn to help you feel your best.
