Gallstones

What are Gallstones?

Gallstones are solid deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a digestive fluid. Gallstones can range in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball, and can be made up of cholesterol, bilirubin, or other substances. Gallstones can develop when there is an imbalance in the components of bile, leading to the formation of solid particles that clump together and form stones.

When is it necessary to see a doctor?

If you feel symptoms of Gallstones such as severe abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right abdomen, along with nausea, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin or eyes, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. A doctor can perform diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound or CT scan, to confirm the presence of gallstones and recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or in some cases, surgical removal of the gallbladder. Risk factors for developing gallstones include a high-fat diet, obesity, rapid weight loss, a sedentary lifestyle, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes and liver cirrhosis.
