Caitha Barr, OTR/L, CLT, is an occupational therapist at FemFirstHealth, a women’s health practice designed to bring physical therapy and wellness services to the women of New York City. As a certified lymphedema therapist, Caitha takes a holistic and personalized approach to lymphedema and breast cancer rehabilitation. She believes that by treating the whole person, and not just their diagnosis, patients can achieve their optimal level of function and quality of life. Here, Cathia shares with us how she got into the field, the wide ranging practical application of OT, and its profound impact through patient-centered care.

What inspired you to pursue occupational therapy as a specialty, with a focus on lymphedema therapy?

I was initially drawn to the field of occupational therapy because of my mother's influence. She is an optometrist, and her passion for healthcare inspired me to explore a career in the medical field. In high school, my mother introduced me to a patient of hers who happened to be a pediatric occupational therapist. I had the opportunity to shadow this OT, and it was during this experience that I first discovered my love for the profession. I always enjoyed working with children and initially considered specializing in pediatric occupational therapy. However, during my first semester of grad school, I had the privilege to shadow at a cancer hospital, and this experience completely transformed my perspective. I was exposed to the world of lymphedema therapy and cancer treatments, which I had not encountered before. What struck me most about this specialization was the holistic approach taken with each patient, especially those who were either preparing for surgery or undergoing cancer treatment. The comprehensive care provided to these patients, addressing their physical and emotional needs, deeply resonated with me.

What advancements or research within the field of women's occupational therapy are you currently most excited about?

Advancements in post-mastectomy rehabilitation and lymphedema management techniques to improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors. Although lymphedema is a chronic condition, there are research studies coming out on more integrative practices and surgical management to help alleviate symptoms.

How can patients incorporate occupational therapy into their breast cancer treatment?

Patients undergoing breast cancer treatment can greatly benefit from incorporating occupational therapy into their care. Occupational therapy helps individuals regain and enhance their ability to perform daily activities and routines, thereby improving their overall quality of life during and after breast cancer treatment.

What is Manual Lymphatic drainage, and what conditions can it be used to treat?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique designed to stimulate and enhance the functioning of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a vital component of the body's immune and circulatory systems, responsible for maintaining fluid balance, filtering waste products, and combating infections. MLD is a gentle and rhythmic manual therapy that targets the lymphatic vessels and nodes, assisting in the removal of excess fluid, toxins, and cellular waste from the body.

MLD can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, with Lymphedema being the most common. It's important to note that MLD should only be performed by trained and certified therapists, as it requires a deep understanding of the lymphatic system and the appropriate techniques to avoid complications. The selection of MLD as a treatment option depends on the specific condition and the individual's medical history, so consulting with a healthcare professional is essential before starting any MLD treatment.

Here is a list of medical conditions MLD can be used for, including but not limited to: Lymphedema, edema, fibromyalgia, arthritis, post-surgery recovery, skin conditions, migraines, chronic venous insufficiency, sinus congestion, and stress and relaxation.
